According to the reports, the pilot wanted to take his family on a trip to a restaurant some 125 miles north of Christchurch when the helicopter he had bought just months ago crashed at a rocky beach.

Following the crash, nearby residents rushed to the scene and rescued the survivors from the wreckage in fear that the helicopter could catch fire. While both Andrew and Lin died, their three children survived.

As one of Davidson’s relatives revealed in an interview with Stuff, “the children have been left without parents” just two months after Andrew had bought the helicopter.

Recalling the tragic moment, a nearby B&B owner explained how she saw the aircraft falling from the sky while she was in her home.

“I just saw the helicopter going round and round and it went down … I think it must’ve gone in the water,” Lyn Mehrtens said. “My husband just took off. He said, ‘God I’ve got to go.’”

After Mr. Mehrtens arrived at the scene of the crash, other locals joined him in a bid to remove all of the crash victims from the aircraft.

“I went over to see if I could help and it was a bit of a mess. Bits and pieces everywhere and people screaming inside the helicopter,” Mehrtens recalled.

“One wee girl was crying and calling out for her mum and the others weren’t too healthy at all.”
