A 12-year-old girl passed away from severe anemia and cardiac arrest after suffering from severe lice infestation for many years.
Kaitlyn Yozviak from Georgia tragically died on August 26. Her parents, 38-year-old Joey Yozviak and 37-year-old Mary Katherine Horton have been charged with murder, WMAZ-TV reported.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Ryan Hilton said that the young girl had ‘the most severe’ lice infestation that they had ever seen.
Hilton said he believed repeated bites from the insects lowered Kaitlyn’s blood iron levels, which resulted in anemia, and may have caused the heart attack.
Wilkinson County Superior Judge Trammell stated that there was enough evidence for murder charges against the child’s parents to go forward to a grand jury.
Horton and Yozviak were also charged with second-degree child cruelty.
The GBI also said that Kaitlyn suffered ‘excessive physical pain due to medical negligence.’
Kaitlyn’s mother, Horton, said to investigators that her daughter had not taken a bath days before she passed away.
When officers arrived at their property, the home was filthy and in poor condition, Hilton added.
Neighbors also told the officers that they had not seen the girl months before her death.
Georgia Division of Family and Children Services documents show that the couple’s two sons were removed from home due to unsanitary conditions.
One internet user commented: “Oh that poor little girl must have been in such pain …fly high beautiful.”
Another wrote: “This is so very sad. What kind of life did this poor little girl have during the short time she was on this earth? It makes me question..why good people can’t have children and monsters like these have multiple children they discard like trash. I know there is no answer, it’s just so terrible.”
