Experts have pointed out that dogs can howl not only when they are calling for a community gathering but also when they want to provide a warning or indicate that something is wrong.

As for Sharla Wilson’s elderly pug, the dog howls for one reason alone – he is scared. The pair just moved to a new apartment complex and due to suffering from cataracts, Charleston Chew Pug often gets scared and howls until his owner shows up.

To avoid making a bad first impression on her neighbors, Sharla decided to write an apology letter in Charleston’s name and share it on the door of her apartment.

The letter read:

“Hello, neighbors!

“My name is Charleston Chew, and I’m very sorry for howling.

“I’m an old man now, with cataracts, and sometimes I get real scared because I can’t see where I am and can’t find my mom.

“As I get used to my new place, I will start to settle down.

“You howl all you want Charleston, honey,” Megan Jones, one of the neighbors, wrote.

“It’s a quiet building and I just didn’t want anyone losing sleep or getting upset over his challenges to adjusting,” Sharla added when speaking to Upworthy.

“This isn’t something he just does when I’m away at work. If I’m in another room or in the shower, he’ll howl for me if he wakes up and I’m not by his side.”
