“Best friends never have the same nature.

They just have the best understanding of their differences.”

When you become good friends with someone, it is only a matter of time before you notice how different you can sometimes be. Maybe these dissimilarities will bother you. Maybe you’re not quite sure how to deal with them.

Well, you can learn a lesson or two from this German Shepherd!

Dogs are the champions of making friends. They can be friends with anyone; they understand the difference between themselves and their friends, and still give them full trust. We can see this from the numerous examples of when a dog became best friends with a cat. Or a rabbit. Or a fox.

But have you ever thought that you would see a pup befriending an undomesticated owl?! This truly is the most unexpected type of friendship. You never even see owls anymore where people live!

Ingo, a Belgian shepherd, has been a police dog for a long time. He lives with his owner Tanja Brandt, who is a professional animal photographer and collage artist in Germany. And in the above picture, he’s hanging out with his best friend, Poldi the owl!

Tanja is an avid animal lover. Many animals, including rehabilitated raptors, hawks, falcons, and owls, use her home as a resting place. Being a photographer, she seizes the perfect opportunities to capture the amazing moments shared between her furry children.

Poldi, which is short for Napoleon, was the smallest of the clutch. His egg hatched the last among his siblings and he needed special care in a safe environment.

Unlike the other dogs who only saw Poldi as a little snack, Ingo sensed that Poldi needed protection, and gladly stepped up for the job!

They became best friends at first sight, and their friendship only grew deeper over time. After a few years of friendship, Poldi no longer needed to be under Ingo’s protection all the time; this is when their friendship blossomed into something truly incredible — a lifelong partnership!

One of Ingo and Poldi’s favorite activities to do together are to sit and relax on the green field. It’s like they don’t have a care in the world when they are by each other’s side.

Their photos taken by Brendt are so peaceful that you can’t help but smile and feel a sense of calm happiness.

Like human friendships, animal friendships change and evolve, as well. Lately, Poldi has kept busy with a special lady friend, and Ingo is spending quite a bit of time with his other interspecies friends. Still, they share the deep connection and they try their best to spend more time together.
