A man who became an instant millionaire after his employer accidentally paid him more than 300 times his salary has vanished without a trace.
When the office worker at Chilean frozen foods giant Cial received 165 million pesos ($181,000) on May 30, he promised to give it back.
His monthly salary was around 500,000 pesos ($544).
After receiving the huge amount of money, he told his line manager about it and he was advised to go back to the bank to return the money, Cial’s lawyers said.
However, the company claims that the worker did not show up. It is now suing the man to get the money back.
According to reports, the worker texted his boss and said that he would go to the bank later as he overslept.
But Cial did not hear anything from him until a few days later, when the employee submitted his resignation letter through a lawyer.
“He was informed and clarified that this money did not correspond to the payment of any service,” Cial’s legal action states.
Founded over five decades ago, Cial owns household brands including La Preferida, San Jorge and Winter. It describes itself as ‘leaders in the wholesale market’ and specializes in cold cuts.
The story quickly went viral on social media and most people said that they would do the same thing, with one person commenting: “I wouldve of done the same thing, except for notify them of anything in the first place. Off to Sweden or somewhere great at blocking extradition and people from getting at ill gotten gains.”
Another wrote: “Adios Amigos………no more packing fish fingers for me…….”
A third said: “Its never considered theft when its a private citizen this happens to, but when its a corporation, oh, now its theft.”
