A woman sent almost $80,000 to her ‘millionaire’ boyfriend she never met online before she realized that there was something wrong with their relationship.
Appearing on Dr. Phil, Terri explained that she met ‘Ricardo’ on Facebook a couple of years ago. But only a month after they started chatting, he convinced her to invest $10,000 in Bitcoin, promising a swift return of $1 million in half a year.
Teri has been sending him money, with only calls and photos to prove that Ricardo was real but she has never seen any return from her investments.
Whenever Terri tried to meet him in person, he ‘always had an excuse.’
Terri’s concerned sister, Tammy, knew it was a scam and went with her on Dr. Phil.
“People are still telling me that Ricardo isn’t real, that he’s scamming me and that he’s not in Canada,” Terri said in tears.
“I don’t believe them… I believe Ricardo’s real.”
Dr. Phil quickly agreed with her sister and exposed the ‘millionaire’ boyfriend as a catfished.
The photos of the ma Ricardo sent to Terry is named James and this is not the first time his images have been stolen.
James said that many of his pictures were taken from his social media and ‘used for romance scams.’
In a video played during the episode, James said: “I’ve been dealing with this for over 10 years. I hope this video can show that I am the person in the photos, but I am not the person that Terri has been talking to and sending money to.”
Terri was left devastated to discover that her online lover was not real. She then vowed to get a new phone number and block the swindler.
“I’m heartbroken,” she told Dr. Phil, adding: “but I’m done.”
