A mother has sparked a debate on social media after sharing that her husband ‘babysat’ their child and told her that it was his Christmas present to her.
Taking to TikTok, mom Iyah told viewers that her husband’s Christmas present to her was ‘two hours of freedom.’
She explained in the viral clip: “So, I just got back from the store, and my husband goes, ‘Did you enjoy your time? That was the other half of my Christmas gift.’ I’m like ‘Where? What is it?’”
Her husband then said: “I babysat for hours, I babysat for hours.”
Iyah continued: “He says ‘Freedom. You were gone for two hours, and I babysat. Your gift was freedom. I love you,’ and he kissed me.”
Her husband added: “I was home with the baby. The greatest gift of all for a mother.”
TikTok users were not impressed by the way the husband referred to looking after his baby as ‘babysitting.’
One person commented: “I really hope you guys are able to sit down and discuss that he’s not babysitting if it’s his kid. that’s called parenting. and time away is absolutely needed. it’s not a gift but a necessity.”
Another said: “Ouch… That even hurt me and I have no babies.”
A third sarcastically added: “How lovely, I would love to see more parents babysit their own kids.”
Someone else added: “WEAPONIZED INCOMPETENCE and why are you okay with this man’s ‘gift’ it’s his basic responsibility. Find you a new man AT LEAST for your baby.”
After receiving backlash, Iyah explained that it was just a joke. “It’s called sarcasm/humor. We’re amazed how many people believed we meant it,” she wrote.
