A woman has shared how she was criticized by one of her bosses after she informed them that she couldn’t go to work because of a family emergency.

Hillary Zinks told Buzzfeed how she made some realizations about her job after her sister fell into a coma.

“She (Zinks’ sister) was completely unresponsive and the nurses were looking for next of kin to make decisions on her behalf if need be. I was broken-hearted, frozen. I didn’t even have time to register all of this before deciding to leave to be with her.”

When she had the time, she informed her two bosses: the first one was her boss at her job as a makeup artist in the film industry and the second was the manager at a restaurant where she worked as a server.

Zinks said that her film studio boss treated her with complete empathy.

“When that boss found out, she was like, ‘Hillary please go home. Do whatever you need to do. Be with your family. Be with your mom. Whatever you can. There is no job in this world that is worth missing life over,” she said.

“She is very well known and HUGE in the industry. To have someone with her experience in film and life tell me to ‘never let a job get in the way of life’ and ‘do whatever I need to do’ was exactly what I needed to hear.”

But she received a completely different reaction from her other boss, who criticized her for only giving two hours notice that she couldn’t go to work.

Her boss allegedly wrote: “I do understand and I am sorry for what you are experiencing. I’m curious why you are letting me know two hours prior to your shift?”

The second message read: “It is my job to create a positive work environment for all staff. We have a fifty top today and only 2 scheduled staff members for the shift… we will make it work, we always do. It just makes it hard on the crew that does show up.”

Zinks was left furious and upset but when she got to the hospital, she realized that her boss’ behavior was unacceptable and she no longer wanted to work under her.

“We don’t need to work for people who barely see us as humans with emotions and families. I hope that anyone who has that type of experience has the means and courage to quit. I hope any managers that would have done something similar would now take a step back and learn from her mistakes,” she expressed.
