A 27-year-old woman left doctors stunned after she gave birth to a giant baby, who weighed over 16lb.
Cleidiane Santos dos Santos from Brazil gave birth to her baby boy via c-section.
Her son, Angerson Santos, measured 1.9357ft tall and weighed 16.1 lbs. Hospital Padre Colombo revealed that the baby had been placed in an incubator but showed no abnormalities and was in stable condition.
Doctors believe the newborn is the biggest to have ever been born in the state, beating the previous record set by Pedro Aluzio, who was born weighing 14lb 8oz.
According to reports, Cleidiane was visiting the hospital for a routine obstetric consultation when medics realized that her baby would be too big for her to carry full term.
The next day, she welcomed her baby into the world and he was already twice the size of the average baby.
The clothes Cleidiane and her partner bought do not fit so hospital staff have launched a fundraiser to help the family out.
Cleidiane thanked the medics for their support, saying: “I want to thank the team at the Padre Colombo Hospital, who are giving me strength and treating me very well, since when I got here. If it weren’t for them, I don’t know what would become of me.”
She added: “I appreciate each one.”
American Pregnancy Association states that most babies are born weighing between 6 and 9 lbs. Having a higher weight can result in increased health risks for the child and ‘can make the delivery of the baby difficult,’ the U.S. National Library of Medicine stated.
According to the Guinness World Records, the heaviest baby was born in Italy in September 1955, weighing 22lb 8oz.
