A single mother has been slammed after she created a GoFundMe page and asked for $40,000 so she could build her ‘dream home’ for her four children.
Kara-Louise Hoppo reportedly posted her fundraiser on the Darwin Buy Swap Sell Facebook page but deleted it after receiving negative messages.
“We are in a bit of a housing predicament and I’m manifesting that we’re going to get out of those permanently this year. I’ve found a way, but I cant do it without help,” she wrote.
Her GoFundMe page, which has raised more than $7,000, explains that the mother-of-four is “seeking donations to help us buy two demountables, and set up a permanent home on a friend’s block which we will either rent cheap or be able to stay by contributing with help.”
Hoppo also explained that the demountable buildings are clad in Colorbond steel, water-proofed, and fitted out with electric connections as well as bathroom and a small kitchen.
Such buildings cost $20,000 but the mother wanted more funds to purchase a third ‘blank canvas’ demountable, fit it out, and transport them all to a build location.
The mother explained that she had no regular job and had to watch over her four children but she was studying and would open a business.
In another post, Hoppo said that she has found a company that builds ‘pop-out’ homes for $33,000.
But many people were not impressed by her ideas, with one person commenting: “The audacity of this! Maybe she should use the same internet to open Seek and get a job like every one else.”
Another wrote: “There are people out there who genuinely need and deserve help, not asking for free rides. Help them instead.”
A third added: “Does she know she has to report the money she gets donated to Centrelink?”
