A man has sparked backlash after he revealed how he refused to wait for an elderly woman on an elevator because he was being impatient.
Taking to Reddit, he explained that as he went to the elevator while on a vacation, a family of five entered. But he was left confused when the family kept on stopping the door from closing.
“The girl stands in the doorway with her hands on her hips. I make eye contact with the father then the mother then the girl. Ten seconds pass. I look at them again with a puzzled expression. The girl says, ‘We’re waiting for Grandma!’”
After five more seconds passed, he said he told the family: “The elevators are really fast here. You don’t have to hold the elevator.”
“The mother says, ‘We all want to ride with Grandma’. A few more seconds pass (maybe 20 from start to finish) and grandma gets on the elevator.
“She looks at me (we are of the same ethnicity) and asks if I am part of some organization staying in the hotel. I said I was not.
“Then the father says, ‘He definitely isn’t one of them, those people are nice…’. I said, ‘I’m just in a hurry and a bit impatient.’”
He went on: “I certainly could have patiently waited for Grandma but it seems rude to jump onto my elevator and make me wait for Grandma to come out of her room. & Then say I’m not nice!”
The man then asked Reddit users if he was the a***ole.
One person commented: “I’m going with soft you are the a**’hole. By your own admission, it was 20 seconds. 20 seconds my dude.”
Another said: “I gotta disagree. Time is relative, and making a whole elevator wait 20 seconds while you hold the door is way past the socially acceptable amount of time.”
