A 30-year-old prisoner was accidentally freed only two days into his four-year jail sentence.
Lauras Matiusovas was convicted of blackmail at Wood Green crown court in North London and was sentenced to four years and six months behind bars.
But only two days later, he was accidentally released from prison.
After his release, Matiusovas called a friend who arrived to pick him up from jail.
In a video taken on their way home, his friends can be heard shouting: “Fresh home!” while he laughed with them.
Sources explained to The Sun that the release was caused by multiple errors in court paperwork.
Speaking to The Sun, one of Matiusovas friends said: “He even contacted probation, who told him everything seemed to be in order and to make sure he went to the next appointment.
“It’s mad – he could have jumped on a flight and left the UK. Instead he chilled with us and had a great time.
“Imagine if it was someone in for violence or a sex offender – it’s a real scandal.”
As soon as they realized the error, the police were alerted and the 30-year-old was sent back to prison 10 days later.
“Releases in error are incredibly rare but we take them extremely seriously,” a spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice told LADBible.
“This prisoner is already back behind bars.”
According to The Sun, six prisoners had been accidentally released by the courts between January and March.
One of them was even convicted of threatening behavior and assault.
Earlier this year, a 49-year-old prisoner in Canada was accidentally freed early because of an administrative error but he decided to turn himself back in.
