Prince Charles’s first meeting with his granddaughter Lilibet was ‘emotional’ and had a special reunion with 3-year-old grandson Archie, a royal source has said.
The future king met his grandchildren when their parents Prince Harry and Meghan Markle brought them during their visit to the UK for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Both the Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, were ‘absolutely thrilled’ to see the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their children when they flew from California for the festivities.
Harry and Meghan reportedly left the monarchy in crisis after their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The couple claimed that an unnamed royal questioned the skin color of their son before he was born and that the royal family failed to support the duchess when she was feeling depressed while pregnant.
A senior royal source said during a briefing at Clarence House’s annual review that it had been ‘wonderful’ to have Harry and Meghan back in the UK for Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
“It was fantastic to see them. It was wonderful to have them back in Britain,” the source said.
“The prince and the duchess were absolutely thrilled to see them,” the source continued.
“The prince, of course, hasn’t seen his grandson Archie for a bit of time and so it was very, very, very special to have some time with him.
“He hadn’t met Lili, his granddaughter, and so to meet her was very emotional, a very, very wonderful thing.”
Lilibet celebrated her first birthday in the UK and also met the Queen for the first time during their stay.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the thanksgiving in St. Paul’s Cathedral but sat across the aisle from Prince Charles and Prince William.
They did not participate in other public jubilee festivities.
