A homeowner divided the opinions after revealing she was confronted by her neighbor for holding a BBQ party without telling her about it in advance.
According to the UK-based woman in question, she hosted a BBQ at her home and went on to start the grill without informing her neighbor first.
At the time, the neighbor, a woman, was drying her freshly washed laundry outside and the smoke from the BBQ permeated the clothes leaving the owner furious.
Sometime during the party, the woman was confronted by her neighbor who allegedly stormed out of her house and told her she should have informed her before starting the grill so that she could remove her clothes and protect them from the smoke and smell.
“I was a bit taken aback by her tone but replied and said ‘I’m really sorry, I didn’t even think. Next time I’ll give you a knock and you can take your washing in.’ She replied and said ‘No, I won’t be taking my washing in, if I have washing out you won’t be able to have a bbq!’ And she stormed off,” the homeowner wrote.
“Now, I’ll be honest it didn’t even occur to me to let the neighbors know I was having a bbq but yes ok I see that in the future it would be courteous to let them know. But am I being unreasonable to think that even if the neighbor has clothes out I can have the bbq anyway?!”
After sharing her story on Mumsnet, the woman received mixed responses both from people who sympathized with the neighbor and those saying she can do whatever she wants at her home.
“I can see if my immediate neighbors have washing out so I do check, and I would let them know so that they could get the washing in,” someone wrote.
“I would tell them in advance. Just imagine if this happened to you and your hard work was ruined by smoke coming from your neighbors,” another agreed.
A third argued: “I wouldn’t bother in your case, as she sounds like an entitled cowbag. She can’t decide whether or not you have a BBQ!”
A fourth suggested: “Depends on how small your garden is and how close together you are. We have very small side by side gardens and so text as a matter of politeness and pre-warn. Larger gardens or more space and it’s not an issue.”
