A mother-of-16 has opened up a school for hundreds of poor and underprivileged children in Southern Africa.
30-year-old Dora Moono Nyambe became an online influencer and inspiration for many after adopting 13 children and fostering three in need of a warm and loving family.
After raising nearly $400,000 through TikTok, the young teacher moved to the village of Mapapa in Zambia to start a public school after seeing the need for education.
While the teacher initially taught underprivileged kids in the shade under the trees, donations soon started pouring in and a school called Footprints for Hope was born.
Since then, more than two hundred children joined the school where Dora provides them with free education, food, and even a place to sleep for those with no home.
“I came to papa in 2019 to visit with a friend of mine, and that’s when I discovered that there was extreme poverty in the village,” the proud mama said.
“Kids didn’t go to school or even have a place to learn, some would spend a day or two days hungry, so I decided it would be better if I just gave everything up and started a school under a tree.
“I came over with my kids, at that stage I had five, I took all my savings and bought some land and started feeding the kids with the money, and buying school supplies and everything else.”
She went on to reveal that it was her daughter, Grace, who inspired her to join TikTok and start documenting her journey and her efforts in the form of videos.
“I said I can’t because I’m not a dance person, but I decided to share a bit of my life – feeding the kids, educating them under a tree, and people were really interested and my account started gaining traction until I was verified,” Dora said.
“I was hesitant to set up a GoFundMe but it was the best decision, people started coming on and helping, sending me gifts, and now we have 12 classrooms and a library, storage room, kids studying two syllabuses, Zambia and Cambridge.”
As Dora explained, the school now boasts some 180 to 200 students whereas more are expected to enroll soon.
“They come on their own, if a child comes and says they want to start school or they want a meal we don’t turn them away,” the mom-of-16 said.
