A mother has shared the moment she found over $1,300 hidden in a secondhand item she purchased from a charity shop.
And now, she’s left feeling conflicted as to what to do with the money.
The unnamed mother took to Mumsnet and explained that she bought a ‘lovely’ blanket from a charity shop. Before throwing it in the washing machine, she noticed that there was something inside.
“I was checking for any washing instructions on the labels and that’s when I noticed that in one-quarter of the blanket it felt different… the more I pressed on that area the more I could almost feel something move so curiously I made a cut and I’ve found money inside,” she wrote.
“It’s not old notes, it’s UK money and quite a chunk.
“Most of it in £50 notes and we are talking over £1,000, I don’t want to say how many thousands.
“I don’t know what to do. Go back to the shop? Or keep it.”
The mom explained that they are scheduled to go on a holiday and the cash would “really help” with their family expenses.
Hundreds of people replied to her post, with many encouraging her to keep the money while others told her to return it.
“You could split it half to the charity and keep half,” one wrote.
“I’d keep it. You won’t find the owner. Could be someone’s donated belongings after a clear-out or someone passing and is unaware of what’s in the blanket, they won’t miss it if they didn’t know it was there. Perhaps make a donation to the charity and enjoy the rest?” another wrote.
“Could you speak to the charity to a) see if they can track down the donor and b) donate to them if not? I genuinely think it would be unethical to keep it, personally – the fact you’re going on holiday doesn’t come into it; many people can’t afford a holiday at all so it hardly justifies holding onto the money!” a third added.
