The Duchess of Sussex left King Charles shocked with a four-word response to his kind gesture, a new royal book claims.
When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry in 2018, all members of the Royal Family gathered in St. George’s Chapel to see them exchange vows.
But only days before the royal wedding, Meghan’s father Thomas Markle announced that he wouldn’t be able to attend.
King Charles, then Prince of Wales, was quick to step in and offered to walk his daughter-in-law down the aisle.
But royal author Robert Hardman said in a new book that Meghan’s reply to the kind gesture was ‘somewhat unexpected.’
“The reply, according to one friend, was not quite what he was expecting: ‘Can we meet halfway?’
“Here was an indicator that this was no blushing bride, but a confident, independent woman determined to make a grand entrance on her own.”
Since their 2018 Royal Wedding, many things have happened for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. From stepping down from their royal duties to welcoming their two adorable children Archie and Lilibet.
They were recently reunited with members of the Royal Family after the Queen passed away at Balmoral Castle at the age of 96.
During their visit in the UK, the California-based couple attended the late monarch’s state funeral and also joined Prince William and Kate – the new Prince and Princess of Wales – for a walkabout to meet mourners and view floral tributes.
Now that the couple have returned to the US, royal expert Duncan Larcombe said it is time for them to decide whether they want to be ‘in or out’ when it comes to royal life.
“Charles, Camilla, William and Kate are entering a new era of the institution. It’s up to Harry and Meghan whether they want all or nothing,” he said in an interview with OK! Magazine.
“When William and Kate became the Prince and Princess of Wales, one of their first jobs was to reach out to Meghan and Harry, and Charles explicitly affirmed their relationship in his speech, no matter what has been said and done.”
“In my opinion, it’s only Meghan and Harry who can decide what they want,” Larcombe added.
“Do they want to forgive and forget, creating unity with the royal family? Or do they want a wholly separated life in California? They cannot have both.”
