The Royal Family has been living in Windsor Castle for almost a millennium, with the late Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson among the recent residents.
The estate features numerous properties, including cozy cottages and mansions, which Her Majesty gifted to her family members, including the beautiful Frogmore Cottage that she gifted to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after their Royal Wedding in 2018.
But reports revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made a living request that the Queen deemed ‘inappropriate.’
The Sussexes wanted to live in the Castle itself and asked if “living quarters could be made available after their marriage,” The Times reported.
But at that time, only Her Majesty and Prince Philip had apartments within the castle and other members of the family were living elsewhere.
The late Queen “politely but firmly suggested” that Harry and Meghan live in Frogmore Cottage instead.
Royal expert Katie Nicholl said in her book The New Royals that the late Lady Elizabeth Anson, who passed away in 2020, said the Queen described Windsor home as a ‘big deal.’
“The cottage was a big deal. The Queen’s entrance into the gardens is right next to their cottage. It is essentially her back yard, her solitude, and her privacy,” Lady Elizabeth expressed.
“She was giving that up in gifting Harry and Meghan Frogmore Cottage. We all thought it was very big of her. She said, ‘I hope they’ll respect it.’”
Before the Sussexes were granted Frogmore, other homes in Windsor were put forward as their possible residence.
One of the cozy homes was Adelaide Cottage, which is now the home of the new Prince and Princess of Wales and their children.
