The Duchess of Sussex has shared some of the upsetting remarks made about her and how she was forced to keep her cool.
In her latest episode of the Archetypes podcast, Meghan Markle detailed insults that she received in the past.
The former Suits actress was joined on the podcast by Indian actress Deepika Padukone, American actress Constance Wu, and American comedian Jenny Slate.
The Duchess spoke about how she and other women have been called ‘hysterical’ and ‘crazy.’
“Raise your hand if you’ve ever been called crazy or hysterical, or what about nuts? Insane, out of your mind, completely irrational, OK? You get the point,” she told listeners.
“Now, if we were all in the same room and could see each other, I think it would be pretty easy to see. Just how many of us have our hands up? By the way, me too.”
Meghan also said that calling someone ‘hysterical’ or ‘crazy’ minimizes what they are feeling.
“I feel pretty strongly about this word, this label ‘crazy’, the way that it’s thrown around so casually and the damage – it’s rotten (for) society and women, frankly everywhere,” the Duchess went on.
“From relationships to families being shattered, the reputations destroyed and careers ruined. The stigma surrounding the word, it also has this silencing effect.”
The mother-of-two also admitted how she struggles to cry as she is ‘conditioned’ to be ‘composed’ but said that she just wants to ‘let it out.’
Meghan also described the ‘medical gaslighting’ experience tennis professional Serena Williams experienced after giving birth.
When Williams complained of pain being a possible blood clot, a nurse told her that the medicine ‘might be making her crazy.’
“Now Serena has a history of blood clots and she was feeling awful after her C-section. She demanded a CT scan to look for clots and instead a nurse said, I think all this medicine is making you talk crazy. Now of course, Serena Williams knew her body. And she was right,” she added.
