Meghan Markle was reportedly in hysterics when she called her PR team after Buckingham Palace reacted to her interview with Vanity Fair about the Duke of Sussex, a new book claims.
Journalist Tom Bower, the author of ‘Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors,’ says the former actress was ‘ecstatic’ when she was asked to do an interview with the magazine and appear on the cover of its September 2017 issue.
Kaleigh Thomas Morgan, a partner at the Suits star’s PR firm Sunshine Sachs, organized the interview that was conducted by Sam Kashner.
But when Vanity Fair focused on her relationship with the prince instead of her work as an activist, philanthropist, and an actress, Buckingham Palace reacted with ‘fury.’
Only hours after the magazine’s pre-publication copies were sent to the Palace, Bower said that the duchess-to-be rang her PR firm and ‘hysterically’ told them about Buckingham Palace’s fury.
Bower said that Kashner was told the Duchess-to-be was under strict orders from both the British prince and her PR firm to avoid sensitive subjects.
In his new book, Bower said: “Both knew that a lot was riding on the interview, and both understood that the critical issue of Harry had been vetoed.
“Meghan spoke, he realized, knowing that she had the winning ticket but avoiding giving an impression of triumphalism.”
According to Vanity Fair in 2017, Meghan also said: “I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time.
“This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
Pre-publication copies of the September 2017 issue were released to Buckingham Palace and Meghan’s PR agency.
However, her openness about Harry left the Palace shocked, according to Bower.
“Like a thunderclap, the interview triggered sensational reactions: Meghan had used her relationship with Harry to promote herself,” the author said.
“The Hollywoodisation of the royal family had sealed Meghan’s fate as Harry’s fiancée.”
After ringing Keleigh Thomas Morgan and Ken Sunshine to tell them of the Palace’s reaction, Ken Sunshine reportedly told the magazine’s editor that he would have to “deal with the Queen on this.”
