A wife was shocked to find out that her husband of more than two decades was living a double life.
Melanie Addie from Missouri couldn’t believe it when police suddenly showed up at their house and told her that her husband had been engaged to another woman.
Her husband, 56-year-old James Addie, cheated on her for over 7 years with another woman named Molly Watson.
But three days before Molly and James were planning to tie the knot, Molly’s lifeless body was found outside of her vehicle.
Only two weeks after police arrested James, Melanie immediately filed for divorce.
The 56-year-old was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Speaking to 20/20, Melanie said: “It was just mind-boggling. It made no sense at all. It didn’t seem right. This was not my life.”
Melanie said that James, who worked as a corrections officer, was ‘intimidating, ‘controlling, and ‘selfish’ throughout their marriage but she never suspected that her husband was already cheating on her.
“He was a pretty selfish person … He could be controlling and intimidating … it could be challenging,” she said.
Melanie and James share two children together – a son named Ben and a daughter named Emma.
“He would get off work at 3 P.M. … and usually he would get home at 5 and I would say, ‘Why are you always so late?’ That would be an argument. He didn’t want to tell me anything,” Melanie recalled.
During the trial, prosecutors theorized that James had told Molly that his wife had died in a car accident.
“Forensic searches of Molly’s phones indicated that the day before she was murdered, she was looking for Melanie Addie’s obituary,” prosecutor Talley Smith said.
Melanie said he visited James in prison but he insisted that he wasn’t the one who killed Molly.
“(He said) he’s very sorry for the affair, but he insists that he was not the killer,” she revealed. “I looked at him as someone I didn’t want back.”
