Only 6 Of The 109 Affordable Homes Brad Pitt Built And Sold To Hurricane Katrina Survivors Are In Livable Condition

Only 6 of the 109 affordable houses Brad Pitt’s Make It Right foundation built and sold to hurricane Katrina survivors for $150,000 are still in livable condition.

Most of the houses, which were constructed for $26.8 million, have construction-related problems that have resulted in rotting wood, termites, mold, and flooding, said urban geographer Judith Keller.

As of 2022, six of the houses are vacant due to structural problems as they were built without essential needs for the sub-tropical climate.

According to reports, two of the homes have been demolished due to severe mold.

Keller told Daily Mail that most of the houses have visible water damage and rusted roofs, while many lots remain vacant almost 20 years after the hurricane.

“Things are getting worse,” she expressed, “and things that aren’t getting worse are staying the same. But there is very little to no improvement.”

The issues have left many residents fearing for their safety and health, with many claiming they are starting to become ill because of the mold.

One resident told Keller: “There is just no turning this off. Sometimes I think I’m sitting on a time bomb in this house.”

Many residents have said that they are always ‘on edge,’ describing their situation as ‘very stressful.’

Others have sued Make It Right but the foundation hasn’t resolved the problems and has stopped assisting the residents, the Daily Mail reported.

One resident identified only as Hanna said that the problems started only eight months after they moved into their house, saying it “was completely in shambles.”

She now struggles with health problems caused by mold but she doesn’t know how their problem could be resolved.

“I would like to say that there is always a silver lining, but with this situation, I really don’t see a silver lining because it really changed a lot of my plans that I had for myself in life,” she told Keller.
