An 8-year-old girl who was just selling lemonade had her booth shut down after police received a report.
Asa Baker was so happy selling drinks near a food festival when police arrived and had her operation closed.
Speaking to WJW-TV in Ohio, Alliance Police Lieutenant Don Wensel said that they received a complaint from festival organizers.
Asa’s mother, Katrina Moore, said: “I could definitely tell he did not want to shut her down, but, I mean, you get a call, he has to do it.”
The police officers who were evidently annoyed that they were forced to do something have given the child $20 so she could get the permit.
“He definitely did the right thing, you know, in the situation he was put it.”
Lt. Wensel said that while officers do not target children selling lemonade, the city states that sellers must get a license before they could sell to the public.
“In order to get a food vendors license, it only lasts for five days and its $40 for five days so that’s kind of out of the picture,” Katrina continued.
“If she wants to sell on the street, she has to get a street permit. If she sells in front of a business, we have to get a solicitors permit.”
The young girl’s lemonade stand was running again in front of local business owner Eric Strata’s place were officers said they would no longer interfere.
Mr. Strata said he saw a Facebook post about the girl’s situation and offered to give assistance with the permit process.
“He (the police officer) had to do his job, but it just felt so unjust to me because she’s 8, she’s just an innocent little girl that wants to be motivated and wants to do something with herself. Why shut that down?”
