A man has shared how he found an abandoned baby covered in ants in a trash bin while he was on a holiday in Haiti.

Jimmy Amisial said he looked around to check if a parent was trying to soothe a baby but when he didn’t see anyone, he searched for the source of the sounds and was shocked to see the baby inside the bin.

The four-month-old child was covered in ants and it was clear that he was distressed.

Jimmy, who was only 22 at that time, said people around him appeared reluctant to help. So he lifted the baby and took him home to his mother Elicie Jean, 66, where the child was cleaned up and given milk.

“People were crowding around this bin and I heard them arguing about what to do with this tiny baby,” he shared.

“Everyone was just staring at him – not a single soul wanted to help. He was crying and had no clothes on and I could see the pain in his eyes – I had to do something.”

Police tried to track down the boy’s parents but they failed to find them.

Little Emilio has spent the last few years with Elicie while Jimmy was attending Texas State University. He has been splitting his time between Haiti and America to see the child.

“When I found him, he was four months old – now he’s nearly five,” Jimmy shared. “It’s been an incredible journey and watching him grow up has been so rewarding – I’m very proud of him.

“I had to do what I had to do when no one else wanted to do it, and I’m so grateful for the past four and a half years.”

The 27-year-old said he feels like a father and that he’s excited to make Emilio his son.

Jimmy said that he did not have a father growing up and the baby was facing a lifetime of uncertainty and instability.

“Something inside was telling me that this had happened for a reason – so I took a leap of faith,” he said.

“Sometimes you don’ have to know what to do, you just have to be ready, to do it.”

He started the journey to officially become Emilio’s father but he still needed to raise $30,000 to complete the adoption.
