His son had supported his Lt. Dan Band and had worked with the Gary Sinise Foundation until the advancement of his cancer forced him to quit.

Writing in his obituary, Sinise said: “I am so blessed, fortunate, and proud to be his dad.”

He also recalled the double tragedies of 2018, when his wife Moira received her breast cancer diagnosis in June before Mac was diagnosed with spinal cancer in August.

After successful surgery and treatments, Moira went into remission but her son lost his battle.

Sinise revealed that Mac’s last project for the foundation was a podcast interview with father and son.

When his son stepped away from work to focus on his health, he turned to music.

“The cancer had paralyzed him from the chest down, but he still had limited use of his right arm, and fingers on his left hand,” Sinise shared.

Mac used a stylus strapped to his hand to select musical notes as he worked on an unfinished composition titled ‘Arctic Circles,’ which was ‘inspired by the wintery nature shows he loved watching while lying in his hospital bed.’

Composer Oliver Schnee, Mac’s friend from USC, collaborated with him to make the final touches on the composition.

Sinise also recalled their recording session in November last year, which marked Mac’s final birthday celebration.

“It was a very special day for him, and he asked me to play bass on one of the tunes, a cover of the old American folk song Red River Valley, with him playing harmonica,” he expressed, explaining that it was a song his wife would sing to her son as a child.

“That day was indeed a special day for the two of us.”
