Drew Barrymore has issued an apology after she voiced her opinion about the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation trial.
The 47-year-old sparked a debate when she shared their thoughts on the case between the former couple. She was also met with a backlash online, with many accusing her of displaying a lack of ‘empathy’ towards victims of abuse.
Speaking about the trial, Barrymore said: “It’s like one layer of crazy, it’s a seven-layer dip of insanity.”
She continued: “I know that these are two people’s real lives and I know what it’s like to have your life put out in public.
“I understand all the feelings, but they are actually offering up this information.”
Her remarks immediately sparked bitter backlash and lengthy debate online, with many slamming the actress.
The CBS talk show host was forced to bend to the pressure from social media critics, taking to Instagram where she apologized and promised to turn people’s reactions into a ‘teachable moment.’
In a one-minute video, Barrymore said: “It has come to my attention that I have offended people with making light of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard and for that I just want to deeply apologize and appreciate everyone who spoke out because this can be a teachable moment for me and how I move forward and how I conduct myself.
“I can be a more thoughtful and better person moving forward because all I want to do is be a good person and I very much appreciate the depth of this and I will grow and change from it, and I thank everyone for helping me grow along the way and teaching me.
Her apology has sparked more controversy on social media, with many insisting that the actress shouldn’t have had to apologize for sharing her thoughts.
“Drew Barrymore having to apologizing for saying the Depp/Heard trial is crazy is really stupid and a waste,” one person wrote.
“Was she not allowed to comment on the #JohnnyDeppAmberHeardTrial at all? Why not? Everyone else is,” another said.
