Demi Lovato, 30, announced in 2021 that they are non-binary and would be using they/them pronouns.
But the Cool For The Summer hitmaker told her fans that they had been ‘doing some healing and self-reflective work’ that had led them to reevaluate their gender identity.
“With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to ‘they/them’. I feel that this best represents the fluidity that I feel in my gender expression, and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering,” the Camp Rock star said.
In August of last year, Lovato said that they have re-adopted the she/her pronouns again, explaining on Spout Podcast: “I’m such a fluid person that I don’t find that I am…I felt like, especially last year, my energy was balanced in my masculine and feminine energy.
“So that when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said women and men, I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn’t feel necessarily like a woman, I didn’t feel like a man.
“I just felt like a human.”
Lovato also told fans that ‘nobody’s perfect’ and ‘everyone messes up pronouns at some point, especially when people are learning.’
In an interview with GQ Hype Spain, the singer explained why she decided to use she/her pronouns in addition to they/them.
“I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting,” she expressed.
“I just got tired. But for that very reason, I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.”
