A couple has shared their traumatizing experience with Uber after they were charged $29,994 USD bill for a ride in Costa Rica even though it should only cost them $54.
Dominique and her husband Doughlas Ordonez were celebrating their fifth anniversary when the Uber nightmare happened.
Doughlas took to Twitter and shared a screenshot of the bill from Uber, writing: “Uber charged me $29,994 USD for an Uber ride in Costa Rica.”
The couple were expecting a currency conversion from Costa Rican colones to USD but were left shocked when they saw that their account was in minus.
Even though the company told them not to worry, the couple claimed that they waited for more than a day for a response.
“Trying not to let this ruin the remainder of my trip, but…. Yes! Uber charged me $29,994 for a single ride!” Dominique wrote on TikTok.
“Correct conversion should have been $54, but was charged 600% more. Contacted Uber: They replied w/ “Do not worry”, but did not provide any further assistance.”
She went on: “I cannot find a customer service number anywhere. They have ignored my messages & I have only received pre-generated messages.
“Yes, I contacted my financial institution @Altura Credit Union immediately. They said there is nothing they can do about it at the moment as I have to wait another 4 days for the amount to possibly convert to the correct amount.”
Her video quickly went viral, gaining more than five million views.
Luckily, the charge was eventually reserved and the couple were still able to enjoy their vacation.
“I ended up getting all my money back,” Dominique said in an update.
