Celine Dion’s family shared a heartbreaking update on the singer’s health condition months after the 55-year-old canceled her Courage World Tour.
The Power Of Love hitmaker is battling with Stiff Person Syndrome, an autoimmune disorder of the nervous system that causes muscle stiffness and spasms of the back and lower extremities.
She said at that time: “Hello everyone, I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to reach out to you. I miss you all so much and can’t wait to be on stage talking to you in person.”
The singer then told her fans that she’s been dealing with health problems for some time and that it was hard for her to talk about what she was going through.
“Recently I’ve been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder called the stiff person syndrome which affects one in a million people,” she revealed.
In a heartbreaking update in early August, her sister, Claudette Dion, said that the singer needs to rest as she fights her health battles.
Speaking to Hello! Canada, Claudette said: “She’s doing everything to recover. She’s a strong woman.”
She also said that they are ‘praying for a miracle.’
“There are spasms – they’re impossible to control. You know how people often jump up in the night because of a cramp in the leg or the calf? It’s a bit like that but in all muscles. There’s little we can do to support her, to alleviate her pain.”
According to Dr. Andrew McKeon, a Mayo Clinic neurologist, SPS can affect anyone at any age but it predominantly affects women.
“We’re crossing our fingers that researchers will find a remedy for this awful illness,” Claudette expressed.
“(Fans) love Celine. Not only for the voice she has but also for the human being she is. For the woman she has become, for the mother she has become. We love her for the person she is,” she added.
