Most people would think that the entire world is celebrating with Brendan Fraser after he won the 2023 Best Actor Oscar.
Viewers were delighted to see the George of the Jungle star finally get his first Oscar, thanks to his role as Charlie the 600-lb father and teacher in the film The Whale.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Fraser fought back tears as he said: “So this is what the multiverse looks like!”
Fraser than thanked Aronofsky for directing a ‘bold film’ and other nominees for their ‘whale-sized hearts.’
One of his fellow nominees was Austin Butler, whose role in Elvis biopic saw him earn the Golden Globe Award and BAFTA for Best Actor.
It is understandable that his fans think that the 31-year-old actor would also get the Oscar but when the Academy’s decision was announced, they took to Twitter to protest.
One person wrote: “Austin Butler should have won! Will never watch the [Oscars] again! Good night and thanks for the waste of a good evening!”
Another tweeted: “I don’t think people understand that Austin Butler embodied Elvis for 3 years, so of course he’s gonna sound like Elvis. He should have won that Oscar in my opinion, he worked so hard, not only for himself but for Elvis and the Elvis family.”
A third said: “Austin Butler should have won. He personified the King, studied his every move, sang the songs perfectly, had the moves, and literally morphed into Elvis himself. I’m so disappointed he didn’t win. I’d never even heard of The Whale before tonight. How disappointing!”
Someone else added: “Austin Butler was robbed. In all of the Elvis bio movies ever made, he was supreme. The Academy got this one wrong.”
