Arnold Schwarzenegger, 76, has revealed how he almost died after doctors made a huge mistake during his third open heart surgery.
Sharing a video on YouTube, the actor opened up about the valve replacement surgery he underwent and said there were some complications that happened during the procedure.
The Terminator star, who was born with a congenital heart defect, said: “I woke up and all of a sudden the doctors were in front of me saying, ‘I’m so sorry but it was unlike what we planned,’” leaving him freaking out.
Schwarzenegger explained that the non-invasive procedure became complicated after the medics “made a mistake and poked through the heart wall.”
Because of the internal bleeding, the medical team had to “open (him) up very quickly to save (his) life.”
After the terrifying experience, the actor said his perspective in life changed. “The bottom line is, you cannot roll the clock back. It was a disaster. I was in the middle of a disaster,” he expressed.
“So now, how do I get out of it? You have to shift gears. Collect yourself, shift gears, and say, ‘OK, what I need to do now is get out of this hospital.”
The actor said that his first step was to ‘get out of the bed.’ He then shared a video of him walking in the hospital, revealing that he took longer walks after he accomplished his first ten steps.
He also shared how he kept himself motivated, saying he called his friends and told them to ‘fire me up.’
“The bottom line was I was getting going because the doctors said you have to exercise your lungs because if you get pneumonia, you can die,” he explained.
“So I wanted to get really going with exercise, get out of the hospital as quickly as possible.”
Thanks to his persistence and ‘positive attitude,’ the former governor managed to continue his recovery in time for Terminator 6.
