The young man in question, whom we shall call Robert, revealed that he is expecting a baby girl with his wife, Angela.

Determined to honor the memory of his ex-girlfriend, Nancy, Rob decided he wanted to name his daughter with Angela after her.

Defending his decision, the husband told his wife that his ex had passed away unexpectedly and that he wants to “remember and honor” her this way because he misses his “best friend” terribly.

“I had a girlfriend for around six years before meeting my now wife. Unfortunately, she passed away and I was absolutely devastated. It’s still painful to think about and I always imagined naming a child in her memory,” Robert explained in his viral Reddit post.

“My wife felt it was strange and didn’t make sense as Nancy had been my girlfriend. The way I see it is that Nancy was very important to me for a really long time.”

Speaking of the issue that created a massive rift in his current relationship, the man added: “She was my best friend and losing her was just a terrible thing. I feel as though it would be a great way to remember and honor a dear friend who I miss every day.”

After his suggestion went viral, Robert was quickly slammed by hundreds of readers who called him insensitive and selfish for reminding his wife that she was only his second choice.

“It comes across as, ‘hey wife you’re my second choice, so let’s name our kid after what would have been my first choice,’” someone wrote.

“You can’t tell your pregnant wife you miss your ex even now as you prepare to bring a child into the world together,” another said.

Robert later admitted he has since dropped the suggestion after realizing it is important both parents agree on the child’s name.

“It seems like most people have said that I’m wrong in this situation which is understandable,” he said after some deliberation.

“I think I’ll apologize again and hopefully the situation will end there. It probably was a weird idea and maybe I wasn’t seeing that clearly as I’m still grieving to some extent.”
