Oprah Winfrey has spoken out and revealed that she was left ‘surprised’ by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s bold claims and accusations.
During the bombshell CBS interview, in which Meghan and Harry accused the British monarchy of racism and blasted the Royal Family for not doing enough to help Meghan amid her mental health issues, Oprah appeared to be shocked as the couple claimed a royal had voiced concerns about how dark Archie’s skin would be.
Speaking on CBS’s This Morning about her long-awaited interview with Meghan and Harry, Oprah admitted she was caught by surprise.
“I was surprised they were telling me about it. Even on the tape you can hear me go ‘Whoa, I cannot believe you are saying this right now,’” she said.
Oprah, who was one of the special wedding guests during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding back in 2018, also recalled the time she was left “disheartened” by her conversation with the Duchess.
“She had just joined the royal family and she shared a conversation with me then that made me feel somewhat disheartened,” the talk show host recalled.
“She said she had been told, been given advice, that it would be best if she could be 50% less than she was. That was the quote, if she could be 50% less.
“I remember hearing that in 2018 and I said to her, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to survive, being half of yourself.’”
As Oprah admitted, she was taken aback not only by Meghan and Harry’s racism allegations but also by the Duchess’s disclosures about her depression and suicidal thoughts.
While the talk show insisted Meghan and Harry didn’t name the royal who allegedly made racist comments about Archie’s skin tone when they were off-camera, she claimed Harry confirmed that the comments were not made by the Queen or the Duke of Edinburgh.
“I think the skin tone, the discussions about what color Archie’s skin tone would be,” Oprah added in This Morning interview after being asked which part of the interview took her by surprise.
“What also surprised me, and that is why I clarified, were you just feeling badly, were you feeling sad or were there suicidal ideation thoughts of harming yourself, that also surprised me. It surprised me Harry said he was trapped.”
