Whenever you hear something talking about bugs, you’re almost always likely to hear a scream. The reason? They’re creepy, crawly, and always know how to get under your skin. But there is an exception to the rule, the ladybug.
No other bug has a better PR agent than the ladybug. Having one land on you is considered good luck, and it’s adorable polka-dot pattern is something that we adore, especially when we dress up our little ones just like them. Most people wouldn’t mind if they found a few in their house, in fact, most would probably welcome them, but what some species of lady bugs are able to do will shock you!
If you’re from Central Texas, you may know what we’re talking about. As many ladybugs will have us think they’re cute and innocent, the Asian lady beetle is anything but. You can tell by the name that it is a non-native species to invade the area, but what makes it scarier is that over time, they’ve adapted to look very similar to the regular harmless lady bugs we all think of!
But what makes these Asian lady beetles so terrifying?
For starters, Asian lady beetles will bite humans in an attempt to feed on them.
They’re known to at least take a nibble on whatever they land on, whether it’s your end table or you!
But as pesky these little critters may be, they were actually introduced to the Southern US back in the 60s to help control pests that destroyed crops, such as pecans and apples — And without controlling the population of these pest-controllers, they became pests themselves!
During the winter months, you should be especially wary about these infestations. These Asian beetles like escape the cold and nestle into your cozy home, especially indoors where the sun shines!
As with all bugs, the most common reaction to seeing one would be to crush it, but you should definitely take a moment to reconsider. Crushing them will release a noxious odor and can leave yellow stains, wherever they happened to be squished!
But hope is not lost — in fact, this is the best part about dealing with them is that it’s the easiest! The best method to remove these critters from your home is to break out the vacuum cleaner and just point! What you do afterwards is up to you, but be careful about releasing them back into the wild, as they can come back into your home!
If you have any pets, you should be wary about letting them play with the Asian beetles for too long. They have been known to infest the roofs of dog’s mouths! If your dog starts foaming at the mouth, this could be the reason!
