More Than 180K People Signed Online Petition To Spare Life Of Dog That Bit A Child, Requiring Amputation

Over 188,000 people signed an online petition to spare dogs’ lives after one of the animals left a 4-year-old child with an amputated arm.

Sources said the boy was in the yard of their home in Utah when he reached through a fence and into a neighbor’s yard, where two Huskies were.

Layton Fire Battalion Chief Jason Cook said to NBC News that the boy had a sock in his arm. One of the dogs bit him so hard it cut off a part of the boy’s arm.

The 4-year-old was airlifted to a hospital in stable condition and he had surgery. The fire battalion chief said he has “never been a part of a call like that” during his almost 3-decade career.

The Huskies are quarantined by Davis County Animal Control while the investigation goes on.

Rhett Nicks, director of the animal shelter, said to WHCMH-TV that there is a change the dogs, named Bear and Polar, may be put down because of the severity of the boy’s injury.

“We are doing a dangerous dog investigation, which could range from nothing being done up to euthanasia,” he expressed.

After the incident, a woman who said she is a friend of the owner made a petition on Care2 asking for the Huskies to be saved.

“This situation is unfortunate on both sides,” she wrote. “There are fears that Bear might be put down and he doesn’t deserve to be put down for this freak accident.”

One supporter said: “These dogs did nothing wrong. The mother is at fault for not watching her child. It’s genetically ingrained in dogs to chase/catch, having a child putting just his hand through wearing a mitten and have the rest of him non visible to the dog, the dog would not associate the hand as belong to a human but as a fun toy. As the child would of instinctively retracted his hand, the dog would see this as tug-a-war.

“You can’t blame a dog for being a dog. They should not be destroyed because of the mother’s reckless monitoring of her child.”

Another supporter wrote: “A dog shouldn’t lose its life because of an accident, stuff like this happens on a regular basis and i don’t see other dogs getting put down because of it so why should these dogs?”
