The world’s oldest married couple has opened up about their relationship and revealed how they managed to stay together for decades despite their families opposing their relationship.
110-year-old Julio César Mora and 104-year-old Waldramina Quintero are an inspiring couple from Ecuador who have managed to honor their wedding vows for decades.
According to the couple who tied the knot back in 1941, nearly 80 years ago, “honest work” and “mutual respect” are the secret ingredients to a long-lasting marriage.
“Family unity under the rules of love, mutual respect, honest work, and proper education based on family values are the keys to healthy coexistence,” they expressed according to the Guinness World Records.
While the couple, who already boast of 11 grandkids, 21 great-grandkids, and 9 great-great-grandkids, still holds to their vows, keeping their relationship in one piece wasn’t always easy.
As the couple revealed, their families were opposing their union which is why they got married in secret in front of their friends and godparents.
“With time and patience we were able to unite them and we became an example and the best reference for the younger generations,” the couple said of their opposing families.
Like all couples, Waldramina and Julio faced their share of disagreements over the decades. However, they always managed to deal with their problems and refused to let them influence their children.
“Respect, compassion and consideration with which we maintained our relationship was very important; we never argued or fought,” the couple said.
“There were disagreements, but they were not noticeable to any of our children who also deserved respect and love.”
According to the centenarian couple, “the love and maturity” they shared with each other throughout the years had helped them “to know each other and grow emotionally.”
“It is true that at this time it is difficult because we are overwhelmed by the pandemic that affects the world and we still do not have a solution. However, the first step for us to follow the rules with respect and love the life,” the couple said.
