Three other cops involved in the murder of George Floyd have been charged as former officer Derek Chauvin’s charges got upgraded.
Following the death of George Floyd, fired police officer Derek Chauvin, who was seen kneeling the handcuffed man’s neck for several minutes, had been charged with third-degree murder.
Now, the disgraced cop was slammed with a second-degree murder charge whereas his accomplices have been arrested and charged with abetting second-degree murder.
The officers charged with aiding Chauvin include Tou Thao, J.A. Kueng, and Thomas Lane – all of whom have been arrested amid nation-wide protests sparked by Floyd’s death.
According to the reports, the three fired cops now also face a maximum sentence of 40 years in jail.
“I strongly believe these developments are in the interest of justice for Mr Floyd, his family, this community and this state,” Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison expressed during a Wednesday press conference.
As the attorney general added, the decision to upgrade Chauvin’s charges and charge his accomplices was based on factual circumstances and was not a result of public pressure. He also warned that it could take months before they’d be able to build a solid case.
“I asked for time for to review all the evidence. The investigation is ongoing at this time. I know it’s asking a lot of people to give us time and yet we did get that time,” Ellison added.
The attorney general went on to pay a tribute to Floyd and his family and reassure the public that his team would investigate as quickly as possible and build a strong case.
