An NYPD officer has been charged with assault after being filmed pushing a 20-year-old girl to the ground during a Black Lives Matter protest in Brooklyn, New York, on May 29.
28-year-old Vincent D’Andraia was caught on camera marching down a street in Brooklyn when he pushed Dounya Zayer, causing her to fall to the ground.
Days before the cop has been charged with assault, harassment, and criminal mischief, he had been stripped of his badge and suspended without pay.
According to Zayer’s lawyer, the protester suffered a concussion, bruising, and a seizure as a result of being pushed by the officer.
“I am in pain. My head hurts. I haven’t slept in three days… and I cannot stop throwing up,” the 20-year-old said in an interview with NBC after the incident.
According to Zayer, she was pushed to the ground, with force strong enough to knock one of her shoes off her foot, after D’Andraia approached her as she was moving backward.
After the officer told the girl to move, she allegedly asked him why before he called her a “stupid f****** b****” and shoved her away.
“Them acting the way they acted today isn’t helping the cause. It isn’t proving to us that they care about us,” Zayer added in an interview with NBC.
“He did this in front of his lieutenant and multiple other officers who watched me hit the ground. One even looked back to make sure I was still on the ground and they continued walking.
“Not one officer tried to help me and not one officer tried to stop the officer who assaulted me.”
