Much attention has been put on the dangers of obesity and with good reason.
But what many don’t realize is that these same dangers to humans also apply to animals.
Kai was one of those poor dogs suffering obesity and at 173 pounds, he could be called one of the fattest dogs in the world. In fact, he was so fat that he could hardly move. Unfortunately, instead of trying to lose weight (as what any person who wants to become healthy would do), his former owners decided to take him to the vet and have him euthanized instead.
Such a request would easily shock any pet lover out there but luckily, the vet didn’t give in to the request. In fact, after examining Kai, the vet concluded that losing around 100 pounds could bring the poor golden retriever back to a normal life.
The vet managed to find a foster mom named Pam who agreed to take on the challenge although she was at first at a loss on where to begin.
Pam said that when Kai first arrived at her home, he needed around 20 minutes to go up 3 steps.
She had difficulty getting Kai to move. Whenever she took him for a walk, he would end up lying down on the ground after only a few steps. He didn’t play with other dogs in the park simply because he couldn’t. He’d just sit on the sidelines and watch them.
But Pam was determined to get Kai back to normal so she put him on a strict diet and walked with him three times a day. She also had him swim in the water in order to get a more full-body workout.
Her persistence paid off. There were gradual improvements such as Kai being able to take more steps, to walk longer, and to jump, apart from being able to move faster. Pam was so happy when she saw Kai being able to lick his back legs.
One year after she took him in, Kai transformed from a fat and lazy dog into a fit and active one. And he lost those 100 pounds thanks to Pam’s dedication and perseverance.
Kai even has his own fan club at the local park where everyone would cheer him on. And other people can see his story at his very own Facebook page.
Kai’s story is one example that shows that everything is possible and that one should never give up. It is a story that exemplifies big goals being achieved through small steps. With hard work and Pam’s help, Kai became a normal and healthy dog with an active life.
Once Kai’s goal was reached, Pam realized that she was so used to having him around and decided to keep him. Not only was Kai lucky enough to have his life saved, he now had the loving family that he deserved!
