On April 2, a girl named Lindsey was heading for a Justin Timberlake concert in Indianapolis and she noticed a parked car on the shoulder and a man struggling to walk.
“He started waving his arms and he fell to the ground,” Lindsey told The Times-Mail.
Lindsay had studied on health careers at the North Lawrence Career Center (NLCC) that taught her some emergency training.
According to Times-Mail, ‘’BEDFORD — ”Lexi Lindsey was focused only on anticipation of a great experience at the Justin Timberlake concert April 2 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse when something caught her eye during the drive to Indianapolis.’’
‘’Lindsey, a senior at Bedford North Lawrence, noticed a car pulled over on the shoulder on State Road 37 near Tapp Road in Monroe County. She saw a man struggling to walk up a grassy slope toward the highway and the parked car.’’
“He started waving his arms and he fell to the ground,” said Lindsey, recalling the story last week at the North Lawrence Career Center during a break from class.
‘’When the man collapsed, he was partially in the travel portion of the highway.’’
“I screamed, ‘Stop the car!’” she said.
‘’Lindsey started running back to where the man was, calling 911 while running. The first thing she did was pull him from the road onto the shoulder, which was no easy task for the petite young lady.’’
“He was a pretty big guy,” she said.
‘’Fortunately, he had not lost consciousness.’’
Clutching his chest, he was able to tell Lindsey that he had an internal cardiac defibrillator and it was shocking his heart.
‘’That’s when Lindsey’s training kicked in.’’
‘’Lindsey is a student in Heidi Myers’ Health Careers I at the NLCC. She enrolled in the class because she wanted to learn more about the different career paths in health care, but in addition to learning about health care jobs, she also received CPR training, basic first aid and Stop the Bleed instruction.’’
‘’That knowledge, she said, kept her from panicking as she quickly assessed what she should do until the ambulance arrived.’’
“He was wearing a FitBit and I could see that his heart rate was extremely high,” she said. “I was ready to do CPR if I had to.”
‘’When the man — in the rush of the moment, she never got his name — began to have a seizure, she knew just what to do.’’
‘’Soon, the ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital.’’
The week after this event, the man surprised Lindsey with flowers in her class.
“I’m just glad you’re OK,” she said as she was excited to see him healthy again.
The two took a picture together and he thanked her for saving his life.
