A dedicated nurse who was dubbed a “kind and caring nurse” by her friend has passed away from cancer after an alleged delay in treatment caused by the pandemic.

Anna Fernandez was a hardworking Acute Medical Unit nurse and mother-of-two from Solihull, England. The 44-year-old was originally diagnosed with colon cancer back when she was just 38 years old.

After beating the disease, Fernandez had been in remission for five years before cancer returned and took her life just one day after her youngest son’s birthday.

Following the mother’s death, her friend, Jen Tulay Navarrette, started a GoFundMe page in order to raise funds to help Anna’s husband Paul with the funeral expenses.

As Jen insisted, the “generous” nurse passed away following “detrimental consequences” caused by the “delays in some of her treatment.”

“My dear friend Anna was diagnosed with colon cancer at an early age of 38. Armed with a strong faith in God and surrounded by supportive family and friends, she braved the battle and had remission for almost 5 years,” Jen wrote.

“Sadly it has recurred early this year. Since the world has been plagued by COVID-19, delays in some of her treatment had detrimental consequences.

“She joined our Creator on the dawn of Saturday 19th September, a day after her youngest son Andre’s birthday. She died peacefully at home in the presence of her family and very close friends.”

As Jen added, Fernandez was dedicated to her family and work and never complained “even when the going gets tough.”

“She was like a ray of sunshine – a friendly, witty, kind and caring soul. She was very helpful and considerate to her colleagues,” the nurse’s friend wrote.

Anna is survived by her husband Paul and their two sons aged 7 and 13. May she rest in peace.
