A young female nurse has been arrested on suspicion of murdering eight and attempting to murder at least nine infants while serving at a neonatal unit at her hospital.
29-year-old Lucy Letby was initially arrested in 2017 on suspicion of being associated with the incidents involving 15 babies between 2015 and 2016.
Since then, however, the probe has widened, leading the police to re-arrest the young nurse on suspicion of murdering eight and attempting to kill at least nine infants.
Since July last year, the police have been investigating 17 incidents that occurred at a Cheshire hospital and were linked to Letby.
“As part of our ongoing investigation we have today re-arrested the healthcare professional on suspicion of murder in relation to the deaths of eight babies and the attempted murder of six babies,” Inspector Paul Hughes, a Cheshire Police Detective in charge of the probe, revealed.
“She has also been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of three additional babies. The woman is currently in custody helping officers with their enquiries.”
Following the woman’s arrest, parents of the involved babies have already been informed of the development of the case and are being assisted by support specialists.
“I would like to reassure people that we are doing everything we can as quickly as we can to identify what has led to these baby deaths and collapses,” Mr. Hughes added.
“Due to the nature of this investigation it is extremely challenging but it is important to remember that it is very much active and ongoing – there are no set timescales and we remain committed to carrying out a thorough investigation as soon as possible.
“At this stage, we are unable to go into any further details about the investigation but as soon as we can provide any further updates we will do.”
