“Do you want to let him go?”
These were the first word those were said to my parents at the time of my birth. The doctor who delivered me told my parents that I was “not viable” when I was born because I was born armless.
My parents cried over it a lot. But 35 years later, here I am. Completed school education, passed college with a master degree, married with the girl of my dreams, and a father of the 2 perfect kids.
Sharing my story with the world at places like schools, colleges, seminars, churches and every possible place people wish to call me and hear me out.
It was my parents who did not give up on me. They had an option to let me go but they decided not to. The words have not really had a major impact on my life but I heard the same words a few days ago on the radio.
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam spoke the words on the radio in an interview. He described the third-trimester abortion where he said that the child who will be considered as “not viable” will be delivered and will be kept comfortable.
Then the call will be made by the family and the mother if they want the baby or if they want to let it go.
The thought shook me and sent me directly to the thought that why don’t these babies have no say in their own life choice? I am glad that my parents never gave up on me and they decided to have me even after the doctors suggested them not to.
In the long time that I have been talking about my story and the journey I have been through, I have met so many parents who have children who are disabled in the terms of world and they all just told me one thing that their kids have just added more value to their life.
Rather than taking them just as a birth defect, we should take them as individuals who are willing to live despite all the hardships.
I am glad that my parents did not give me up and no matter how difficult my journey was, I stand here today with all the pride and happiness in my life.
