Norwich Mushy Peas Stall Completes 70 years


Norwich’s food stall selling mushy peas and pies has a huge reason to celebrate 2019.

The stall is completing 70 years of trading after it was first set up in 1949. At that time, it sold mushy peas just for 5p.

Third generation owner of Norwich’s mushy peas stall, Anita Adcock, who hails from Hellesdon, Norwich, declined to reveal what is the secret ingredient that goes into the popular mushy peas. She proudly describes her food as wholesome.

According to Anita, the peas were traditionally given with mint sauce and taste the best when eaten with a pie and not chips.

Amongst her customers are several ninety-year-olds who have been eating from the stall since it first opened. Definitely, the stall’s quality and taste are outstanding since these people are still in love with its food.

The stall was laid by Anita’s husband’s grandmother and her husband, Reggie, and Joyce Yallop, after the war. It was then passed on to their daughter, Joy, and her husband, John Adcock.

Anita’s husband Carl inherited the stall in 2006; however, it is Anita who has been managing it along with her Saturday girl Alethea.

For the 70th celebration, several regulars were present. Amongst them were Stu and Jackie Ladbrook who visit the stall twice a month.

Talking about the food, Mrs. Ladbrook said that it is tasty, quick, filling and nutritional. Her husband revealed that he loves to eat them with a beef pattie pie.

Mrs. Adcock said after the way, peas were a staple, as they were nutritious as well as filling. She told that she soaks the peas overnight, dries them, and then cooks them.

Mrs. Adcock has two sons, one is an electrician, and the other is a plumber. But none of her sons want the stall since they earn more by doing their jobs.

A mushy pie dish now sells for £1.30 compared to 5p in 1949.
