This Summer, No Whales Will be Butchered in Iceland for the First Time in Almost 20 Years


Summers are back and with the same, time to eat fancy and tasty food is back too.

While the world is getting more aware of animal meat and how is it obtained, more and more people are turning vegan.

Or at least they are stopping eating animals that are rare and endangered. The same goes for whales.

There are a few species that have become endangered and if we keep on exploiting the animal in the same way soon enough these species will vanish.

Fortunately. Iceland has decided to let the whales live this summer.

For the very first time in 17 years, no whales will be hunted this summer in Iceland. What is the reason behind it? Well, humans of the country must have decided to let the whales live as the demand of the whale meat has rapidly gone low in the market.

Hvalur hf. was the last company in the country that was still hunting the fin whales but this year they have already said they would not be hunting as they received their permit extremely late and it is of no use to hunt them now.

The CEO of the whale hunting business in the country said that they are going to put their focus on sea cucumbers this season.

Although, there still is a little demand for the Mink whale meat and the same will be imported from Norway this year. The sad part is that hunting of Mink whales will start again in the springs of next year.

While Norway for the first time in 17 long years is not going to hunt any whales at all, Japan just lifted their 31 years old ban and now people are allowed to officially hunt the whale sin the country. They had their first hunt on the 1st of July.
