A woman was rescued from a kidnapper pretending to be an Uber driver thanks to her quick-thinking actions.
The police were called to Chevron in Seligman, Arizona, after a woman was kidnapped from a car dealership in Phoenix by a man pretending to be an Uber driver picking her up.
After throwing his victim into the car and zip-tying her, the man drove 150 miles overnight before stopping at the Chevron to refuel.
During the stop, the woman managed to slip a note asking for help to another customer who called the police.
“Help… Call 911… Blue Honda Van,” the note read.
Just minutes after the police were called, the kidnapper was arrested a few miles down the road and the woman was rescued.
The kidnapped has since been identified as 41-year-old Jacob Wilhoit who is believed to have a history with the victim.
“On August 22nd at 5 p.m. a woman at a Chevron in Seligman signaled another customer and passed a note that gave her name and asked the customer to call 911 saying she had been kidnapped,” the police shared in a statement.
“The note included a description of the van the woman was in, a phone number, and said that they were going to Kingman and Las Vegas. The customer relayed that the van had just left westbound on I-40, and provided descriptions of the clothing for both the woman and the man with whom she was traveling.
“YCSO alerted the Department of Public Safety to assist in locating the van, which they were able to do at Mile Post 116 on I-40. The adult female victim and a 41-year-old male Jacob Wilhoit were detained without incident.”
Officers also revealed that the victim was saved thanks to the woman’s “extraordinary action in passing the note” and the customer’s “willingness to assist.”
Wilhoit has since been charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, unlawful imprisonment, threatening, and harassment. The victim has been reunited with her family.
