A police eviction turned into carnage in northern Italy after a farmhouse exploded into a giant fireball, killing three Carabinieri officers and leaving 15 more people injured.
The giant two-storey building in Castel d’Azzano near Verona was completely destroyed after one of the occupants allegedly filled the home with gas, triggering a devastating blast the moment that the cops forced entry inside.
Officers had arrived to evict three siblings, who included two men and a woman, all happened to be in their 60s. This is right after repeated refusals to leave and threats to blow themselves up.
Special units and counter-terror police were called in for the high-risk operation, some trying to enter from the roof while others moved to break the entire door down.
As they reached the entrance, officers noticed a strong smell of gas that came from inside. Seconds later, an explosion arose that tore through the whole farmhouse and collapsed the entire structure, engulfing the police, firefighters, and soldiers in rubble as well as flames.
Verona’s chief prosecutor confirmed the operation was also related to a search warrant for possible Molotov cocktails inside the property. Many were shaken by the noise and impact of the explosion, as an investigation is currently taking place to obtain more details on the matter.
