Will Smith’s wife and daughter have spoken out after the legendary actor’s on-air assault during the 94th Academy Awards.
On Sunday night, the Men in Black star shocked the audience at Dolby Theatre after slapping presenter Chris Rock in the face over his insensitive joke about his wife’s baldness.
Following the incident, the 53-year-old actor became the center of a heated debate with some stars defending him for standing up for his wife and others blasting him for resorting to violence over a joke.
Now, Jada Pinkett Smith and Willow Smith have broken their silence on the matter.
Speaking out for the first time since the stained Oscars, Jada Pinkett, Will’s wife, shared the following message on Instagram: “This is a season for healing and I’m here for it.”
The 50-year-old shared the message in a picture featuring a pink background. The image was not accompanied by a caption.
Later on Tuesday, Willow Smith, the daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett, also broke her silence and shared an encouraging message for us all.
“You know who’s going through a lot right now? Literally everyone. Just be kind,” the 21-year-old wrote.
The mother and daughter’s apology comes shortly after Will Smith apologized to Chris Rock for his “inexcusable” behavior at the Academy Awards.
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally,” the actor wrote.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
