Medical investigators from New Mexico shared during the press conference on Friday that Arakwa was infected with the hantavirus that caused the deadly buildup of fluid in her lungs called HPS.

HPS is considered to be very rare in America, with only one or two individuals dying each year, and there were only 1000 cases in the past two to three decades.

HPS is so rare and that is why fans are wondering how exactly she may have been infected. The disease mostly affects hikers, farmers, and campers.

The virus is usually spread via inhalation of airborne particles featuring the virus that’s usually found in the urine, saliva, and droppings of the infected rat.
