White House officials have released a statement after President Joe Biden fell during a graduation ceremony.
The president was in Colorado for the event and handed out diplomas for the US Air Force Academy.
But when he started walking towards his designated seat, he tripped and fell, landing on his right hip. He managed to get up on one knee while being assisted by agents.
The POTUS then went back to his seat and pointed toward the area where he fell, showing that something had interrupted his walk.
After the incident, the president chatted with other officials, giving a ‘thumbs up’ sign and smiling.
The video of him tripping immediately went viral online, with many expressing their surprise at Biden’s fall.
The White House’s communications director Ben LaBolt immediately took to Twitter and wrote: “He’s fine. There was a sandbag on stage while he was shaking hands.”
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also said that the POTUS boarded the plane from the graduation ceremony with ‘a big smile,’ BBC News reported.
This came two months after Biden announced that he is running for a second term.
Some officials have reacted to the incident, including former President Donald Trump.
“I hope he wasn’t hurt,” the 76-year-old said. “You got to be careful about that because you don’t – you don’t want that. Even if you have to tiptoe down the ramp.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also said: “We hope and wish Joe Biden a swift recovery from any injuries he may have sustained.”
“But we also wish the United States of America a swift recovery from the injuries it has sustained because of Joe Biden and his policies,” he added.
